What is Cystic Fibrosis?

CF is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30k children and adults in the US (70k worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that both clogs the lungs and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. Evie (3 1/2) "Dad, can I tell you something?  If I could be one person, I would be you!"

Evie has a little friend Adam who she has known all her life, they are 5 weeks apart in age.  Cali was reading her the Bible and read her the Adam and Eve story.  I came up to tuck them into bed and Evie says with super wide eyes in complete amazement "MOM, GUESS WHAT?"  There is an Adam and an Evie in the Bible!  Ha!

Evie (3) Singing a little Maroon5 "I've got the moves like a jaguar" (instead of mick jagger)

Owen (5) "OUCH!  That ball hit the knee of my finger!"  Me:  You mean your knuckle???

On the way to Owen's very first day of preschool in Sept. 2008 (at age almost 3), I explained to him the saying the sky's the limit (in terms of careers) and told him he can be anything he wants to be, doctor, lawyer, trader, computer worker, engineer, etc. etc. etc.  I said, so buddy what do you think you want to be when you grow up?  He said  "I want to work at Target so I can have a slushy EVERY day."  Fast foward to his last day of preschool (May 2011) and I asked him the very same question.  He replied  "Mom, I will probably change my mind when I get older!"   Got it, buddy, I said, well, if you had to choose today what you're going to do, what would you pick?"  "I'd be a scientist!  I'd make potions and find a way to fix Dean's pancreas."
----------

Cali (7) to Owen (5) "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
Owen "I'm thinking about tickling my belly button."
Cali "Hmm? No, that's not it.  I was thinking about fried chicken."
----------
One morning I asked if Cali or Owen wanted a piece of raisin bread.  Owen (5) replied,  "No thanks, my belly's full.  It's time for me to stretch and fart."

Owen (4) - One day while we were driving, Owen saw a flag at half mast and said "Oh, this is not a good day."  When we got to the next town, he said "Oh, it's ok over here." We asked what he meant and he said "Flags are lowered when someone dies so the first town was going to have a bad day because someone was going to die."
